Schaumburg ready to raze house for new business

Schaumburg officials have recommended approval of a demolition contract to remove a house on Schaumburg Road to make way for more commercial space in the Olde Schaumburg Centre historic district.

The recommended contract would pay Copenhaver Construction of Gilberts $34,900 to raze the ranch house at 35 E. Schaumburg Road and then restore the site.

The village bought the roughly 60-year-old house for $590,000 in 2008 with the stipulation that the original owner would continue to live there until she was no longer able.

Schaumburg officials were notified in August that the elderly resident had moved out and prepared to take possession of the property.

Since then, the house's utilities, water well and asbestos tiles have been removed.

While the village hasn't yet received a specific proposal for the site, Community Development Director Julie Fitzgerald said she expects the future building would share the same architectural style as the rest of the surrounding historic district.

While the Engineering and Public Works Committee's recent recommendation on the demolition contract must be formally approved at the village board meeting of Oct. 27, arrangements may be made to execute the contract earlier.

Engineering and Public Works Director Dave Lawry said a clear goal of the project is to complete the work before any possibility of winter weather, and village board members are well aware of that.

Nevertheless, some further preparation remains necessary, and Copenhaver Construction may or may not be ready to demolish the house before Oct. 27 anyway, Lawry said.
