Boys golf: Barrington tied for third after Day 1 downstate

Barrington coach Mike Kallenbach was cautiously optimistic Friday at the Class 3A boys golf state finals in Bloomington.

"We did OK," said Kallenbach after the Broncos had completed their rounds. "We stumbled a little bit, but we'll see what happens after all is said and done today. I'm hoping we can sneak into the top four."

The day wound up being better for Barrington than the coach had forecast as the Broncos ended day one of the tourney at the "Den" course at Fox Creek tied for third overall.

The meet wraps up Satruday, with a late start. The golfers will begin at 9:30 a.m. due to a forecast of extremely cold weather early.

"Conditions were tough today," said Barrington junior Tom Calbi. "The wind was howling early."

It was Calbi who led the Broncos to a team score of 313, leaving them tied with Lake Forest for third position.

Hinsdale Central, seeking a fourth straight championship, leads the pack at 304, while Neuqua Valley is second at 311.

Calbi fired a 75, a round that included a 1-under 35 on the back 9.

"He had a slow start," said Kallenbach of Calbi, who bogeyed the first 3 holes, "but after that, he really put it together."

Other Barrington golfers counting scores Friday were Tim Lim (78), Cole Kempinski (79) and Burke Barsmanian (81). Calbi's 3-over round leaves him in fifth position in the individual race, just 3 shots behind leader Nick Walker of Neuqua Valley.

St. Viator placed in ninth position at the halfway mark. The Lions (325) were led by senior John Carlson, who ended the day tied with Calbi for fifth. St. Viator also counted scores from freshman Tim Crawford (82), senior Liam Warner (83) and senior Preston Drebho.

Prospect junior Robert Garmoe shot 85 and is tied for 72nd.

Calbi and his Barrington teammates tee off Saturday knowing that the teams above them are still within striking distance.

"I got stronger as the day went on today," said Calbi. "I might have had a little case of nerves at the start. I've got to go out tomorrow and play my first five holes a little better than 4 over, like today, that's for sure."
