Carmel's Amato survives extended playoff, qualifies for state

Carmel Catholic senior golfer Alexa Amato is headed downstate.

Amato fired an 80 in the Class AA Glenbrook North sectional at Sportsman's Country Club in Glenview on Monday. She and three other girls had a sudden-death playoff Monday night to secure the final individual state berth. After three holes, the match was even and suspended due to darkness. The girls resumed play after school Tuesday and Amato earned her ticket to state on the first hole by rolling in a 12-foot birdie putt.

She is the first female golfer from Carmel to qualify for state in more than a decade.

The Class AA state tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.
