San Jose Sharks at a glance
SAN JOSE SHARKS
LAST SEASON: 40-33-9, 89 points. Fifth-place in Pacific Division.
COACH: Peter DeBoer (first season, eighth NHL season).
ADDED: G Martin Jones, D Paul Martin, F Joel Ward, F Joonas Donskoi.
LOST: G Antti Niemi, D Matt Irwin, F John Scott, D Scott Hannan.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jones. The Sharks parted ways with Niemi and dealt a first-round pick and a prospect to acquire Jones as their new starter. Jones is untested with just 29 starts the past two seasons as Jonathan Quick's backup in Los Angeles. But his 1.99 goals against average gives San Jose the confidence he can be the No. 1 goalie the team needs.
OUTLOOK: After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2003, the Sharks parted ways with coach Todd McLellan and brought in DeBoer. While DeBoer doesn't plan to overhaul the systems in place, he will stress better defensive play, penalty killing and five-on-five performance. With the additions of Jones, Martin and Ward, the Sharks have the talent with players like Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic to make it back to the postseason if the coaching change gets them to be more committed defensively and more consistent overall.
