Train hazmat scare turns out to be only an air leak

What was thought to be a possible hazardous materials situation Tuesday night in Buffalo Grove ended up only being an air leak on a freight train, authorities said.

The train was traveling through Buffalo Grove about 6:30 p.m. when authorities were dispatched for a possible hazmat incident just north of Lake-Cook Road behind Yaskawa America Inc., 1067 Johnson Drive, according to the Buffalo Grove Fire Department.

Officials originally believed that an unknown substance was leaking from one of the train cars, but it turned out to be air leaking out of a line on one of the cars, authorities said.

When Buffalo Grove crews arrived to the scene, the train was still moving, but it later stopped south along the Canadian National Railway line.
