Alex Ovechkin scores twice, Capitals beat Islanders 6-2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored twice to help the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 6-2 on Sunday in the NHL's preseason finale.

T.J. Oshie, Jay Beagle and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in a 7:10 span of the first period, and John Carlson added a goal for the Capitals. Kuznetsov and Carlson also each had three assists, and Oshie had two.

Braden Holtby made 22 saves for Washington.

Josh Bailey and Kyle Okposo scored for New York. Thomas Greiss allowed five goals on 18 shots in two periods. Stephon Williams gave up a goal on eight shots in the third.

The Islanders will open their first season in Brooklyn on Friday night at home against Chicago. The Capitals will start the season at home Saturday night against New Jersey.
