Champaign man charged in Elgin armed robbery

A Champaign man has been charged with an Elgin armed robbery, police said Sunday.

Arlan J. Stone, 24, of Champaign was charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said.

About 9:20 p.m. Thursday, police responded to reports of shots fired on the 1400 block of Abbott Drive, according to a police department news release. A man reported that he was walking with a friend when someone approached him and demanded money while threatening him with a handgun, police said. He took electronics from the victim and fled the area, officials said.

Police later determined that the victim had been dragged from the vehicle and that a handgun was fired in the direction of the victim, police said.

The victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin and treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Stone was later taken into custody on an outstanding warrant unrelated to the armed robbery, but the items taken during the armed robbery were found in Stone's possession, police said.
