Prospect takes third in invite

Prospect's girls golf team tuned up for Wednesday's Fremd regional by taking third place in a tough field at the John Macek Memorial Golf Tourney hosted by Champaign Centennial High School on Saturday.

The Knights (330) finished behind state power New Trier (302) and only 2 strokes behind runner-up Galesburg (328) on the University of Illinois Blue course (par 72).

Despite the brutal conditions of wind gusts near 30 miles per hour and the 50-degree temperatures, coach Jim Hamann's Knights shot their best 18-hole score of the season.

Kate Ponzi led Prospect by shooting a 77, good for seventh place.

Next for the Knights came Sabrina Accardi (83, tie for 12th), Delaney Halloran (84, tie for 15th), Emily Fleming (86, tie for 19th), Mary Schafer (88, placed 23rd) and Margherite Pettenuzzo (93, tie for 36th).

Medalist honors went to New Trier's Louise McCulloch who shot a 1-under 71.
