Art guild meeting looks at encaustics

The next general meeting of the Des Plaines Art Guild at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, will feature Jenny Learner demonstrating encaustics, painting with pigment and beeswax.

The meeting takes place at Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker St. in Des Plaines.

Learner is a multi-style decorative artist who is always trying new techniques and media. Classically trained at the American Academy of Art, she is self-taught in interior and surface design and photography. She divides her time as a fine artist and teacher, conducting lessons, workshops and demos, and especially likes working with children and seniors.

Learner also creates on-site specific artwork such as mobiles, custom room dividers, screens, murals on canvas and floor cloths when working with interior designers and architects.

After an introduction to encaustic, she fell in love with the ancient medium of fusing fire with beeswax and pure pigment. The medium's luminosity, transparency, aromatherapy and alchemy constantly surprise her with the unexpected results they produce.

To learn more about the history of this unique medium and to try your own hand at it, the public is welcome to attend the DPAG meeting. There is no fee, but donations are appreciated.

To join the guild, download a membership form at dpag.org.
