Settlement should go to school, charity

The city of Naperville agreed to pay $117,500 to Kim Bendis to settle her lawsuit stemming from her arrest while filming a utility crew installing a wireless electric meter.

Her point has been made, we suppose, for opposing Smart Meters or for the violation of her civil rights.

But, she should not personally benefit from the settlement. She did not take up this questionable cause and actions to earn income. Did she?

I and many other residents of Naperville do not want our property taxes transferred to her personal pocketbook. Otherwise, each and every resident of Naperville will pay her 83 cents.

We call upon Ms. Bendis to now donate her full proceeds from the settlement to the Naperville Education Foundation or Little Friends. She should provide subsequent proof to the Chicago Tribune/Naperville Sun, Daily Herald, and Naperville Patch of the full donation of her proceeds, no later than Oct. 30, 2015.

It is a means for Ms. Bendis to both make her point and show appropriate concern for the Naperville community and her fellow taxpayers and citizens. Ms. Bendis, please do the right thing.
