Video captures burglary attempt at Streamwood jeweler

An attempted burglary at a Streamwood jewelry store early Friday morning may have been foiled by the store's alarm.

Police, who arrived at Vaughn Garouche Jewelers, 1034 E. Schaumburg Road, at about 3 a.m., said the jewelry store window was smashed but nothing had been taken.

A store manager said a new security system was installed last week. The system's surveillance camera was able to record faces of the people who broke into the store. After the store's front glass was broken, the security system's alarm went off, and the store owner and managers were notified.

Plywood is covering the front of the store until the windows are repaired.

The store remained open Friday for customers picking up jewelry or needing repairs, and the manager expects it to be fully up and running again by Tuesday.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Valente said the investigation is continuing as officers review the surveillance video.

"There have been no similar crimes in the area," he added, saying this does not appear to be part of any larger string of burglaries.

Vaughn Garouche Jewelers has been open for three years, and the manager said this is the first time anyone has attempted to take anything from the store.
