Des Plaines to merge plan commission, zoning board of appeals

Des Plaines is planning to combine its plan commission and zoning board of appeals into one board to handle all city planning and development matters.

City officials say the move would mean fewer meetings, reduce staff overtime costs, and enable board members to better vet projects. Separate boards are generally in newer communities, as opposed to built-out municipalities.

The decision to combine boards was prompted in part by the retirement of longtime zoning board Chairman Arnie Seegers.

Together, the two boards have 12 members, but the new one will have seven. Some plan to serve on other city panels, officials said.

The new combined board is expected to convene in January.
