Barrington area residents aim to raise $200,000 for ALS research

More than 200 Barrington area residents hope to raise at least $200,000 at the ALS Walk for Life Sunday, Sept. 27, at Soldier Field in Chicago in honor of three people afflicted by the disease.

If the teams for Kevin O'Brien, of South Barrington; Jeff Kordich, of Hoffman Estates; and the late Paul Launer, of North Barrington raise a minimum of $100,000, then Vince and Pat Foglia will match their funds 100 percent.

More than 7,000 people are expected to participate at the walk, making it the largest gathering for the Chicago ALS community. The event will be emceed by meteorologist Phil Schwarz of ABC 7 and will feature a 2-mile walk along Chicago's lakefront as well as live entertainment, refreshments and children's activities.

In its 13-year history, the ALS Walk for Life has raised more than $10 million. In 2014, the Walk broke records, raising $1.3 million for research, patient services and educational activities.
