Former Cary man dies of injuries after bicycle was struck by van

An 18-year-old former Cary man died Sunday night of injuries two hours after his bicycle was struck by a van near Route 14 and Kishwaukee Valley Road, Woodstock Police said.

The accident occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. The bicyclist was traveling westbound on Kishwaukee Valley Road on a 10-speed mountain bike when it was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Express van traveling southeast on Route 14 at Kishwaukee Valley Road, police said.

Witnesses and the 39-year-old man from Lake in the Hills driving the van told police the bicyclist tried crossing Route 14 on a red traffic signal, police said.

The bicyclist was wearing dark-colored clothing, not wearing a helmet, and the bicycle was not equipped with lights, police said. He was taken to Centegra Memorial Hospital in Woodstock where he died.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the bicyclist pending family notification.

Route 14 was closed to traffic between Dean Street and Route 120 until roughly 1 a.m. while members of the Major Crash Investigation Team investigated.

No charges have been filed. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
