Fire damages Mount Prospect candy shop
Fire gutted a candy store in a Mount Prospect shopping center Monday morning, causing $250,000 in damage, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze from spreading to other shops.
Firefighters responded about 10 a.m. to Dulce Mundo in the Crystal Court Shopping Center at 1741 W. Algonquin Road, said Deputy Fire Chief Brian Lambel.
The first firefighters on the scene found heavy smoke and fire at the front of the store, but were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes, Lambel said.
Algonquin Road was shut down between Dempster Street and Busse Road in both directions and crews were on the scene for about two hours.
The store was just opening for the day when the fire broke out, but no one was injured. After a preliminary investigation, Lambel said the department believes the fire was cause by an electrical failure.
Lambel said the damage to Dulce Mundo is extensive, but the rest of the shopping center, valued at $3 million, was saved.
Firefighters from Elk Grove Township, Elk Grove Village, Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Schaumburg, Glenview, Rolling Meadows and Wood Dale helped with either the fire or managing other calls while Mount Prospect firefighters were on the scene.
