Carcillo retires from hockey to help others

Daniel Carcillo announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday and pledged to help other retirees as they prepare for life outside of professional sports.

Carcillo, whose good friend and former Blackhawks teammate Steve Montador died in February, wants to help former athletes continue their education, find internships and network so the transition away from sports can be made easier.

"My mission is to help guys who are dealing with anxiety, depression, and uncertainty about their future," Carcillo said in The Players' Tribune, where he announced his retirement in an emotion-filled column. "Not down the line, not next week but right now."

Carcillo, 30, was on the Hawks' Stanley Cup winning teams in 2013 and 2015. He scored 48 goals and had 52 assists in 429 career games.

Last season, Carcillo appeared in 39 games for the Hawks, scoring 4 goals and adding 4 assists. He played in just three games after Montador's passing.
