Suspect in Barrington High threats remains jailed

An Elgin man who authorities say threatened to kill students at Barrington High School will remain in the Lake County jail on $100,000 bail until he undergoes a mental health evaluation, a judge ruled Thursday.

Tyler Bosworth, 18, told Judge Christen Bishop he was "feeling much better now that I'm on my medication," during a bond hearing in Lake County court Thursday afternoon. Defense attorney Tom Meyers said the hope is to get Bosworth admitted into a mental health hospital for review.

However, until Meyers is able to set up a mental health screening, Bishop said it would be best if the former Barrington High student remains in the jail and on medication.

"Jail may not be the best place for you," Bishop told Bosworth. "I'm looking for you to be stabilized across the board, with medication and housing."

She ordered Meyers and Bosworth back to court Monday to determine if the Elgin man should be transported in custody to a mental health facility for an inpatient consultation.

Bosworth is charged with felony disorderly conduct after police said he used the social media platform Snapchat on Sept. 6 to say he planned to kill people at the school with guns and knives. Bosworth also indicated he planned to target police officers, authorities said.

He was arrested Sept. 8 after students informed Barrington Area Unit School District 220 officials about the threats. He faces a maximum 1 to 3 years in prison if convicted.

This is not Bosworth's first run-in with police this year. In July, he was arrested when authorities said he spit on an officer and resisted arrest after being found trespassing on a family member's property. He was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer in that case.
