Springfield Dems' misplaced priorities

Illinoisans deserve a government that treats taxpayers with respect and is fair to state employees who administer necessary services. Last week in Springfield, a group of legislators put political insiders ahead of families and businesses.

Democrats, led by Michael Madigan, tried to pass a bill that would have removed the taxpayers' elected representative, Governor Rauner, from contract negotiations with the state's largest public sector union, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. AFSCME representatives asked for pay increases from 11.5 to 29 percent, additional premium health benefits at no additional employee cost, a 37.5 hour workweek, and a few other items which the governor found too costly for taxpayers.

Rather than continuing negotiations, AFSCME, who provides generous campaign funding to Speaker Madigan's caucus, extended its existing contract, while allies in the General Assembly attempted to remove the governor - the official a majority of voters elected to represent them in Springfield - from the negotiations. Senate Bill 1229, if passed, would have ended the negotiations and, in all probability, resulted in a contract granting all requests of the AFSCME representatives.

Fortunately, the efforts of Speaker Madigan and his party failed and taxpayers will maintain their representation at the negotiating table. While three Democrats refused to follow Speaker Madigan, 68 marched in lock step with him including a local representative, Deb Conroy of Villa Park.

Our actions express our priorities. Last week, 68 legislators revealed that their priorities lie not with the families and businesses they represent, but with the political insiders who fund their campaigns. As the 2016 election approaches, we need to make certain that our vote will reflect our priorities.
