Kane Sheriff: Man ate fake license sticker after traffic stop

One could say that a West Chicago man got his fill after a recent traffic stop for an expired registration and suspended license.

John M. Brannon, 46, of the 30W400 block of Whitney Road, faces a felony charge of obstruction of justice and destroying evidence, along with traffic offenses alleging no insurance, expired registration and driving on a suspended license.

Also, Brannon is accused of eating a counterfeit license plate registration sticker.

According to a Kane County sheriff report, Brannon was pulled over at about 4:14 p.m. Aug. 11, at Route 64 and 38th Avenue near St. Charles for a registration that was suspended because he did not have insurance.

Brannon got out of this Chevy S10 pickup, walked around and bent down near his license plate before being arrested, the report said.

"I asked what he was doing with his license plate when he bent down and he stated he had a fake sticker on his plate," wrote the arresting deputy in the report. "I asked him where the sticker is now and he stated he ate it."

If convicted, Brannon faces anywhere from probation to up to three years in prison.

He is free on bond is next due in court on Thursday.

Prison for heroin dealer:

A Genoa man will continue fighting charges he sold heroin in Elgin and South Elgin in 2013, even though his brother and co-defendant has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison.

Christopher Kanehl, 28, of the 500 block of Johnson Street, Marengo, recently was sentenced to prison after admitting to unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. It was his fifth felony conviction since 2005.

Prosecutors said Kanehl delivered heroin to an undercover Elgin officer three separate times in October 2013.

He can have his prison term cut in half for good behavior and gets credit for about 22 months served at the Kane County jail while the charges were pending.

His younger brother, Brandon M. Kanehl, 25, of the 100 block of North Stott Street, also is charged with selling heroin. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the most severe offense.

He is being held at the Kane County jail on $40,750 bail, meaning he must post $4,075 to be released while the charges are pending. He's scheduled to appear in court today.
