Suspect charged in June attack at Elgin restaurant

An Elgin man accused in the June attack of a restaurant employee was arrested Friday night, according to an Elgin Police Department news release.

Lemont Span, 24, of the 1500 block of Meyer Street, is charged with robbery and battery, the release said.

Police were called around 4 a.m. June 30 about a robbery on the 200 block of South Randall Road, officials said. The victim, an employee of Steak and Shake, told police he was in the parking lot trying to stop a customer who hadn't paid for his meal, police said, and the customer knocked him to the ground, punched and kicked him and took his cellphone, the release said.

Span is being held at the Elgin jail to await a bond hearing Saturday morning.
