Irrationally attached to diversity

Once again the editors at the Daily Herald have put on full display their irrational attachment to diversity. We are supposed to believe that McHenry and other suburban counties do not have enough diversity, as if some oracle somewhere has discovered a formula for the correct mix of racial identities.

Allow me to put them straight. The reason that diversity presents a challenge to communities everywhere is because diversity creates social costs. As Denise Barreto, of African-American ancestry, found out living in Lake of the Hills made her unhappy. It did not fit her lifestyle. So, she has decided to move to Evanston, which has more persons who resemble her and her family. Welcome to the club!

Diversity brings division and strife. Don't the headlines from the Daily Herald confirm this truth almost daily? Robert Putnam, a sociologist, found that his research on diversity refuted his confirmation bias. He found that persons who lived in diverse communities did not trust each other. More than that, he found that they did not even trust members of their own group.

Isn't it time for us to direct our attention to more productive goals?
