Learn a new language at Schaumburg library

Hablas español? Mówisz po polsku?

Would you like to learn another language, or at least the basics? Think of how it would enhance your travel experiences, as well as relationships with co-workers, friends or relatives who have not yet mastered English.

If you are concerned about not having time to attend a language class, consider learning on your own time, from your own home or office, with help from the Schaumburg Township District Library.

STDL cardholders can use Mango Languages, a self-study, interactive software program that is simply a mouse click away. Those who prefer the printed page can choose from a selection of language books. Additionally, the library's Audiovisual Department offers plenty of language-instruction materials.

Once you've learned the basics, try checking out a foreign movie to see how much you can understand. You just may pick up some new words and phrases.

To use Mango Languages, go to schaumburglibrary.org and find "Quick Links" on the right side of the page. Click on "Online Learning," then choose "Mango Languages." From there, simply click "Quick Start" and your language of choice. Choose one of the 70 languages available to begin your step-by-step lessons, or use it to learn English as a second language. In addition to language instruction, Mango also provides courses on several cultures.

Book learners, fear not, the library has a huge selection from which to choose. Simply peruse the high 400 section of the book stacks on the second floor, or ask a reference librarian to help you. Those who learn by listening or watching are welcome to check out DVDs, CDs and CD-ROMS in any of the 60 or so available languages in the audiovisual area on the first floor. These will also be found in the Dewey Decimal high 400s section. Staff at the Audiovisual Desk will be happy to assist with finding the items you need.

Learning English as a second language (ESL)? Head upstairs to the library's Literacy area, where books, as well as computer programs and audiovisual items, can be found. Meet with Literacy coordinator Pat Barch for information on which items to use and find out about upcoming ESL classes.

Studies show that children learn foreign languages more quickly and easily than adults. The library's kidsZone staff knows the importance of introducing languages and cultures at a young age and offer monthly international programs, including foreign language story times, multicultural crafts, and more.

This fall, children ages 5 and younger are invited to Spanish Storytime from 6:30-6:50 p.m. in Program Room 1. Children with or without knowledge of Spanish are welcome to enjoy stories and songs in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Children and parents or adult caregivers will attend this program together.

The following month, children ages 4 and older may attend Bilingual Bingo from 1-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Hoffman Estates Branch Library. Children and adult caregivers will play Loteria, a Mexican Bingo-style game with prizes. No registration is necessary for either of these children's programs.

If you are looking to learn a new language, brush up on language skills learned long ago in school, or simply master a few phrases for a job or vacation, come to the Schaumburg Township District Library. You'll be amazed at how a library card can expand your horizons!
