Cardboard boat regatta kicks off Founders Day in Algonquin

Algonquin's 55th annual Founders' Days got off to a bit of a soggy start Thursday with a cardboard boat regatta.

Teams were given 180 square feet of cardboard, a utility knife, 3 rolls of duct tape and 2 hours to build their boat. Participants then had to row their boats 200 feet around the buoys and back to win.

Today, kids can participate in the Children's Games, which includes a football toss, a duck pond game, mini-golf and a bounce house with a slide.

Other special events throughout the weekend include a bake-off, cat and dog show and bike decorating contest today, paddleboarding lessons and the annual parade on Saturday, and a Founders' 1-Mile Run and 5K Walk Sunday.

This year's lineup for live music includes Jack Russell's Great White Pirates, Too White Crew and LAVA Rock, among others throughout the weekend.

Founders Days runs through Sunday. For a schedule, visit algonquinfoundersdays.com.
