Forget these laws at your peril

"They fought the law and the law won."

I'm talking about Sir Isaac Newton's Law of Gravity, and as I'm into my ninth decade of life, feel reasonably qualified to discuss some of its more sinister aspects.

Here are just a few:

Many years ago, a dear friend died from a fall while cleaning his gutters. Another friend was badly injured slipping on an icy curb. Another took a tumble down a flight of stairs without using the handrail and, to this day, has some serious problems.

These were people of various ages who ignored a very basic rule - never, ever forget that Newton's discovery is out to get you whenever and wherever it can. And it will win, with possibly devastating and maybe fatal results.

I recently forgot about a corollary of Newton's law involving motion, inertia and stepladders, and which, thankfully, turned out to be non-life-threatening contusions, bruises and a sprained foot. I was darned lucky.

I would here caution all readers, and especially seniors, to revisit these laws, understand them and, above all, respect them. Whether in the home, on the road or anywhere on foot or on ladders, they are lurking.

They will jump up and grab you when you least expect it. Be thoughtful, careful and vigilant. Don't become a victim of old Isaac's law.
