Elgin drug bust nets armed robbery suspect

A drug bust led Elgin police to capture the suspect in an armed robbery from earlier this week, police said.

Deandre Anderson, 25, of the 700 block of Grace St., Elgin, was charged with one count of armed robbery. His bond was set at $125,000 Thursday.

Police nabbed Anderson, who is a suspect in Monday's armed robbery in the area of Crystal and Ball streets, and a 16-year-old male and said they were selling drugs and ammunition at an Elgin home. The arrests came as the result of a special investigation, police said.

About 10 p.m. Wednesday, the Elgin Police Department Tactical Response Team searched the home in the 300 block of Washington Street after receiving a tip about drug sales. Detectives recovered heroin, cannabis, and ammunition there, police said.

On Monday, a man had made arrangements through an online garage sale website to buy a cellphone from someone in the 300 block of Washington Street. When the man arrived there, he saw two men walking toward him. One of the men pulled out a handgun and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

The 16-year-old is charged with one count of delivery of a controlled substance. The juvenile was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center where he is awaiting a detention hearing.

Elgin police urge residents to use the police station lobby for online sales and purchases from garage sale sites and Craigslist.
