Palatine weighing around-the-clock construction on Rand Road

With major work beginning on one of Palatine's busiest roads this week, village officials could give the state permission to work around the clock to shorten the time the project will take.

The Palatine village council voted unanimously Monday to give Village Manager Reid Ottesen the authority to review IDOT's resurfacing plan of Rand Road between Lake-Cook Road and Arlington Heights Road and determine if they should be allowed to work on the project overnight.

According to IDOT's website, the work will close some lanes on Rand until the project is complete in October. If the village gives permission for work to go around the clock, the hope is that the project won't take as long.

Palatine Public Works Director Matt Barry said the overnight crews will not be using jackhammers or anything else that might wake up nearby residents. Barry said the contractors will be grinding asphalt and cleaning areas of the road that receive nosier treatment during the day.

According to village documents, Rand Road consists of a concrete base with an asphalt surface. By removing the asphalt pavement at night, the concrete base can be inspected and patched the following day, thereby compressing the overall schedule and reducing daytime lane closures.
