Marriage is a civil, not religious contract

I hope this will be the last time that I shall have to point out to Mr. Jim Finnegan and all those who think of marriage in the USA as a religious contract. On the contrary, it is a civil contract, and it is a civil right to marry anyone.

No clergyperson can perform a marriage ceremony unless that person is licensed by the state in which the ceremony is to be performed. You are just as married if the ceremony is performed by a judge who is licensed.

The court just reaffirmed a civil right. By the way,

I notice that it seems more Americans approve than disapprove same-sex marriage, according to polls reported on the news and in the newspapers.

Mr. Finnegan, how are you personally harmed? If you want to feel indignant, be indignant about poverty, discrimination, hate.
