Police: Man tried to take boy in stroller

A man riding in a white cargo van attempted to abduct a boy in a stroller Thursday night in Elgin, police said in a news release.

A 45-year-old woman told police she was walking with a girl and a boy when the van made a U-turn near Gertrude and Morgan streets and approached her about 8 p.m.

She said the passenger, whom she described as Hispanic man in his 30s with short curly hair, average height and a medium build, tried to abduct the boy in the stroller. The woman kept a grip on the stroller and yelled for help. The would-be abductor fled the van, which was driven by another man.

The woman reported minor injuries. The children were not hurt.

The Elgin Police Department has issued a CodeRED, and residents in the area may have received a phone call asking for information.
