Boomers fall to CornBelters 4-3

The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers dropped the opener of a three-game road series by a 4-3 count to the Normal CornBelters.

Normal plated a pair of runs in the first inning against Schaumburg starter Scotty Ward to take the lead early. The Boomers notched three consecutive singles in the second, scoring a run on the third, off the bat of TJ Bennett. Normal added runs in the second and third to open a 4-1 edge. The Boomers were able to claw within a run with a single tally in the fifth as Bennett came across on a wild pitch and another in the sixth on an RBI double from Alexi Colon, but left the tying run on base in the sixth and ninth.

Ward allowed 4 runs in four innings to suffer the loss. Evan Boyd struck out three in two innings of relief. Colon tallied three hits as the Boomers finished with 10 in the contest. Colon's double in the sixth established a new career record for doubles. Bennett and Kyle Ruchim also picked up two hits in the loss.

Schaumburg (20-26) plays a day game at Normal on Wednesday at 12:35 p.m. RHP Brett Mabry (3-2, 3.42) is scheduled to start against LHP Stephen Frey (1-1, 2.84).
