Ralph's Barber Shop marks 50 years in Elgin

Over the sound of jovial banter, the buzzing of clippers has sounded throughout Ralph's Barber Shop on West Chicago Street in Elgin since 1965.

Monday marked owner Ralph Ward's 50th anniversary in business. The shop was closed but decked out with a festive banner Tuesday.

From short hair to long hair and now back to short hair again, Ward says he has seen all kinds of styles during his time as a barber.

Ward first started cutting hair during his four years in the U.S. Navy then continued his trade at another shop in Elgin for eight years.

When the Oak Tree Plaza opened in 1965 Ward moved in on West Chicago Street and has been there ever since.

"It's a great spot," Ward says of his location. "We have been blessed with great customers."

Ward says he has a lot of repeat customers, and a few that have been coming to him for the better part of the last five decades.

Ward's son, Steve - South Elgin village president - has been cutting hair with his dad for the past 38 years.
