Highland Park woman identified as Des Plaines crash victim

A Highland Park woman was identified as the passenger who died after a car crashed into a condo building in downtown Des Plaines on Monday, officials said Tuesday.

Eva C. Lucero, 73, died from multiple injuries sustained in the accident, according to the Cook County medical examiner.

The car swerved off the road shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday and hit a 5-story condo building near River Road and River Street because the driver was getting a leg cramp, officials said.

Paramedics took the Lucero to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was pronounced dead from an apparent heart attack, authorities said at the time, but on Tuesday the medical examiner's office said her death was caused by crash injuries.

The driver and a woman riding in the back seat were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

No one was injured inside the condo or on the sidewalk.

The city building department was called to the scene to evaluate the building's structure, but damage didn't appear to be significant, he said.
