Probation for woman who stole from Buffalo Grove women's group

A Wheeling woman who served as treasurer for a Jewish women's organization pleaded guilty on Monday to stealing more than $20,000 from the group.

In exchange for pleading guilty to theft, Rozann Morowitz, 68, was sentenced to two years of probation. Cook County Judge Bridget Hughes also ordered Morowitz - who authorities say has a 1999 conviction for theft from California - have no contact with the group known as Hadassah.

From June 8, 2011, until Dec. 16, 2013, Morowitz served as treasurer for the nonprofit group. During that time, she forged the signature of the group's president on 86 checks totaling $21,212.83, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Kristin Piper.

Group members discovered the theft after Morowitz left the organization in December 2014, Piper said.

Morowitz repaid the money she stole, Piper said.
