Six Flags' Sky Trek Tower reopens

Six Flags Great America received permission to reopen the Sky Trek Tower ride Friday evening, five days after it stopped and required two hours to evacuate riders.

Katy Enrique, communications manager for the Gurnee amusement park, said the state and Six Flags' own safety and maintenance teams cleared the ride to reopen after a thorough inspection.

The ride, which opened in 1977, consists of a rotating cabin that offers riders a view from 28½ stories in the air.

When the ride stopped Sunday, passengers had to be escorted down a staircase. Information was not available on how the cabin came to be stopped or how many riders were aboard at the time.
