Authorities: Man with knife shot by police officer in Crystal Lake

Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Crystal Lake that left one man in critical condition Monday morning.

A Crystal Lake police officer shot the man as he was charging toward the officer with a knife, officials said. The officer has since been placed on administrative leave.

Authorities said officers were called to the 300 block of Terra Cotta Avenue at 11:10 p.m. Sunday because of a domestic battery. Officers were told the offender, a white man in his late 20s, had battered an adult female family member and had threatened the family member with a knife.

The man, whose identity has not been released, ran from the home before officers arrived, police said.

The female victim was treated at the scene for facial injuries.

At about 1:35 a.m. Monday, authorities said officers responded to a single-family residence on the 800 block of Boxwood Drive for a report of an "unwanted subject" at the home.

The preliminary investigation indicates the offender from the earlier domestic battery entered the home against the wishes of the residents, including the female victim from the earlier event.

Police said the first officer on scene entered the residence after hearing calls of distress within the home. The offender was armed with a knife and charged at the officer.

The officer fired his weapon, striking the offender at least once, authorities said.

The man was taken to Centegra Hospital-Woodstock, authorities said.

As a precautionary measure, the officer was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where he was treated and released, authorities said.

Deputy Chief Derek Hyrkas said no additional information will be available Monday.
