Hanover Park man charged in Bloomingdale arson

A Hanover Park man already being held in DuPage County jail on unrelated charges has been charged with arson in an April apartment fire in Bloomingdale.

Michael J. Green, 18, of the 1800 block of Whitney Drive, is charged with arson and criminal damage to property. He is accused of lighting a large trash container on fire about 10:30 p.m. April 25 behind the apartment complex at 312 Stratford Place.

Bloomingdale Police Chief Frank Giammarese said the fire quickly spread to multiple garages and several vehicles, causing more than $310,000 in damage. He said Green was visiting friends at the complex before setting the fire, but the arson did not appear to be an act of revenge or anger.

"It looks to be a really senseless act that unfortunately grew to be a much larger, out-of-control fire," Giammarese said.

During the course of the investigation, Green and a male juvenile were identified and charged Thursday. Green is being held on $250,000 bail in this case.

Green already was in DuPage County jail on $75,000 bail, charged with a May 14 robbery and aggravated battery at Glendale Heights' Camera Park.

Green's next court date is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 29 in courtroom 4000.
