Crash spills pet food on I-294

One lane of I-294 was closed until 7 p.m. Friday after a semitrailer truck hauling dog and cat food crashed on the northbound side of the highway, spilling bags of kibble on the roadway.

According to news release by Illinois State Police, Jose M. Vigil of Chicago was driving the truck and following the vehicle in front of him too closely while heading north in the left lane. Vigil's truck struck the wall separating the northbound and southbound lanes about 2 p.m.

Master Sgt. Susan Ewald said the crash opened the trailer up "like a can" and spilled its contents onto the left shoulder.

"They've got a crane out there to stand the truck back up," Ewald said. "They've got to offload all of the product (that spilled) onto another truck."

The crash happened near mile marker 41¾.

Vigil sustained minor injuries during the crash and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
