Wheeling man pleads guilty to weapon violation
A 24-year-old Wheeling man on probation for marijuana possession has pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
Daniel Uriostegui, of the 100 block of Wille Avenue, was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $694 in fines Wednesday, according to court records.
Prospect Heights police arrested Uriostegui after their investigation into a March 21 shooting on the 700 block of Piper Lane.
Police arrived in response to several reports of gunshots and found two men - a 38-year-old and a 21-year-old - both with gunshot wounds. Both men recovered from their injuries.
Because of gang affiliations, neither the victims nor witnesses cooperated with the police investigation, authorities said. But after speaking with neighbors, police recovered video surveillance from a security camera that helped them identify a vehicle which might have been used in the shooting, police said.
That led police to Uriostegui's apartment, where they recovered a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle and a .38 caliber handgun.
Uriostegui, who received credit for 87 days in custody, must serve at least 50 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
