Schaumburg Boomers blast visiting Greys 8-1

The Schaumburg Boomers used 4 first-inning runs to set the tone in an 8-1 home victory over the Frontier Greys on Wednesday before 5,411 on a Day Camp Day.

Schaumburg opened a 2-0 lead just three batters into the contest. Joel Hutter, playing in his fifth game since returning from injury, drove home his first 2 runs of the season with a single scoring Jordan Dean and Craig Massey. Anthony Gomez used the momentum to seize control.

Gomez retired 12 in a row after allowing a leadoff single in the first and collected 13 consecutive outs. Gomez worked a career-best 6 innings, allowing just a single run in the win. Dean hit a 2-run homer in the second, and Steve McQuail added a 2-run blast in the fourth.

The Boomers finished with 11 hits and homered twice in a game for the first time this year. Dean paced the offense with 4 hits and 3 runs out of the leadoff spot.

Hutter added a pair of hits and has reached base in every game since his return from injured reserve. Alexi Colon drew 3 walks. Evan Boyd worked a scoreless seventh and Scotty Ward tossed 2 scoreless innings in his professional debut.

The Boomers (13-16) host the Greys again Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Brett Mabry (2-1, 3.00) takes the ball in the rubber game of the series against RHP Justin D'Alessandro (2-3, 2.22).
