Candle starts house fire in Elgin

A candle that fell onto a pile of clothes on the floor of an Elgin home caused a house fire Monday that left its residents displaced, Elgin fire officials said.

The fire happened just after 3 p.m. on the 1000 block of Center Street with firefighters arriving to smoke coming from the second floor bedroom of the home, fire officials said in a news release.

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished, fire officials said, with no injuries reported. Even so, fire and water did about $30,000 in damage to the home and left it uninhabitable, fire officials said.
