Mock crash lets suburban high school students show rescuing skills

High school students studying criminal justice, cosmetology, fire science and emergency medical response all came together Friday for practice in rescue response.

The high school students from a dozen DuPage and Lyons Township high schools took part in a mock car crash as part of the Fire Science/EMT program at Technology Center of DuPage in Addison.

They responded to a multivehicle crash, extricated other students from the cars and transported patients. A medical helicopter also landed at the school as part of the exercise.

The exercise helped EMT student T.J. Kennedy get a real sense of what can happen at an accident.

"It gives us a sense of how we can work as a team together to get the job done as quickly as possible and as best as possible," the Glenbard North senior said.

Cosmetology students were able to put their skills to use and create realistic-looking wounds on other students.

"The purpose of the exercise today is to use all the skills the students have learned all year in a combined effort together," said Capt. Michaelle Jaeger, instructor in fire science.

Members of the Addison Fire Department were on hand to assist the students.
