Letter: Hunting is pro-wildlife, too
A recent 'Guest view' opposes bobcat hunting legislation, yet correctly states that "Illinois wildlife belongs to everybody, and should be managed in a way that maximizes the benefits for all residents."
There is a conflict here: IDNR biologists/ecologists study the state's wild animals, their behavior/needs, and available habitat, and determine what is best for that animal species whether it be deer, bobcat, coyote, waterfowl, fish, etc.
The surest and most cost effective way to achieve the population levels required to sustain healthy individuals who will propagate the species (something the writer advocates for), is to engage licensed hunters who also care about sustaining these animal populations.
Those who appreciate our wild animals and want to see them continue to do well in nature should appreciate the value of those willing to go to great lengths and cost to hunt, and not work to oppose science based legislation that enhances what the writer and I both care about.
