Trip takes adventurers camping, kayaking through DuPage

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend a fun-filled weekend exploring the West Branch DuPage River by kayak and camping at Blackwell Family Campground during the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's "Weekend River Trip" Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10.

Participants will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at the main parking lot at McDowell Grove Forest Preserve in Naperville, where they will receive instruction on kayaking basics before paddling to Blackwell Forest Preserve near Warrenville.

They will camp at the family campground and enjoy an evening meal cooked in cast iron over an open fire. In the morning, after a simple breakfast, they'll take part in a ranger-led archery program before kayaking back to McDowell Grove.

"This trip is designed to accommodate experienced outdoor explorers and beginners alike, so even those who have never camped or kayaked are welcome to join," said Nate Hambel, a district ranger and program coordinator.

The Weekend River Trip is $50 per person and is open to ages 14 and older. Children younger than 18 must be with an adult. Kayaking equipment is included; kayaks have a 300-pound capacity. Participants can use their own tents and sleeping bags, or use equipment provided for the outing. Registration is required through the district's Visitor Services office at (630) 933-7248.

"This overnight trip gives people a great opportunity to explore the West Branch DuPage River and McDowell Grove, which is one of the most historically significant forest preserves in DuPage County," district President Joe Cantore said.
