Gun outside Larkin was actually a knife, police say

An Elgin man who police say flashed a knife resembling a gun outside Larkin High School on Thursday has been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Elgin police said.

Police were called to the school, 1475 Larkin Ave., just before 2 p.m. by a witness who said a man in the parking lot was displaying a handgun, Elgin police said in a news release.

Police located a person matching that description and said they found him to have a knife fashioned to resemble a revolver.

Xavier McRedmond, of the 300 block of South Hawthorn Avenue, resisted arrest, police said. He was charged with one count of disorderly conduct for alarming and disturbing behavior and one count of resisting a peace officer. McRedmond is not a student at Larkin High School, police said.
