Teenager dies from injuries in Des Plaines crash

One person is dead and three others remained hospitalized Tuesday following a crash near Oakton Community College in Des Plaines on Monday.

Michael Polder, 18 of Chicago, was a passenger in one of the two cars involved in the crash at the intersection of Golf Road and College Drive at about 4:45 p.m. Monday. Polder was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 5:34 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Three others were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, said Des Plaines Deputy Police Chief Nick Treantafeles.

He called the crash “very serious,” adding that firefighters had to extricate three people from the vehicles' wreckage.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta was attempting to turn left off eastbound on Golf Road onto College Drive when it was struck by a 2001 Ford Explorer, Treantafeles said.

The driver of the Explorer, a 43-year-old man from Mundelein, was taken to Glenbrook Hospital, he said.

The two others in the Jetta, an 18-year-old and 15-year-old male, were taken to Lutheran General and Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Witnesses told police that the Ford Explorer was traveling at a high rate of speed, but officials are still checking that through accident reconstruction, Treantafeles said.

The crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued yet, he said.

Golf Road was closed for at least three hours on Monday night while investigators worked on the scene.
