Special athletes compete in NEDSRA track meet

More than 200 youths and adults with disabilities will compete in Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association's 36th annual track meet from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard.

Athletes representing 14 park districts across the Western suburbs will participate in events that include running and wheelchair races, softball throw and long jump. Medals will be awarded to the winners with ribbons handed out for other qualifiers.

Assisting the athletes will be volunteer "buddies" who encourage them throughout the day. High school students in need of service hours are encouraged to sign up as volunteers. Family members are also welcome to join in and help support some of the events.

Lunch and refreshments will be available. Other activities for athletes and their siblings include inflatable games, face painting, basketball free throws, snow cones, and music with a DJ. The Knights of Columbus and representatives from area park districts will participate in the opening ceremonies.

Volunteers should fill out the forms posted at nedsra.org or call Beth Corso at (630) 576-4030 for more information.
