School: Des Plaines boy shot in face expected to recover

Counselors will be present at schools in Des Plaines Elementary School District 62 on Monday to help students cope with the weekend shooting of a former classmate, district officials announced Sunday.

In a letter sent to parents and guardians of district students, officials confirm that the 13-year-old shooting victim was a student at Chippewa Middle School through December. The letter does not address why the student is no longer at the school.

The boy, who has not been identified, was shot in the face about 8:15 p.m. Friday in the 1300 block of East Prospect Avenue in Des Plaines, according to police.

The school district letter states that the boy remains in intensive care at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, but is expected to recover from his injuries.

"We are in contact with police to assist in the investigation and to ensure safety on school grounds," the letter states. "Counseling services will be available for students and staff across the district as needed. Additional support will be provided at each of the schools impacted by this event throughout the week."

Police said Sunday they have no new information regarding their investigation into the shooting.
