Newly seated COD board places Breuder on administrative leave

Embattled College of DuPage President Robert Breuder was placed on paid administrative leave last night as members of a new majority on the school's board of trustees began implementing some of the sweeping reforms they've been promising since the April 7 election. Kathy Hamilton was elected chairwoman of the board on a 4-3 vote, and other measures taken to start implementing reforms passed on 4-3 votes. Full story.

Shooter at large in Elgin

Elgin police are searching for the person or people who shot a 20-year-old man multiple times on the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive last night. Cmdr. Colin Fleury said police responded to the scene around 9:15 p.m. and found the victim in the parking lot of the Wendy's near the intersection of South McLean Boulevard and Fleetwood Drive. Fleury said police were canvassing the subdivision behind the Wendy's restaurant for any signs of who shot the victim. Full story.

Jury says Scott B. Peters guilty of trying to kill sheriff's deputies

A jury yesterday afternoon took less than two hours to find Scott B. Peters guilty of attempted murder for shooting two McHenry County sheriff's deputies in October after they went to his Holiday Hills home for a well-being check on his wife and daughter that led to a gunbattle and a 16-hour manhunt. Transgender student: Add gender-neutral bathrooms at Round Lake High

A transgender student at Round Lake High School says he's trying to get more bathrooms converted to gender-neutral use in the building. While acknowledging there is a designated gender-neutral bathroom near the school cafeteria, senior Jonas Valentine, 18, of Round Lake Park, said it's not enough. His effort became public yesterday through an online petition he started seeking support on Care2. Full story.

Villa Park man gets 39 years in prison for starting fatal fire

A Villa Park man was sentenced to 39 years in prison for starting a July 2012 fire that killed a 24-year-old woman on the eve of her birthday and severely burned a 25-year-old man. DuPage County Judge John Kinsella sentenced Todd Mandoline, 26, to 27 years in prison for the first-degree murder of Paula Morgan and an additional 12 years for the aggravated arson that killed Morgan and left her friend, Jason Cassidy, with burns over most of his body. Medical episode leads to three-vehicle crash in Arlington Hts.

A three-car accident that sent one to the hospital yesterday afternoon was caused by a driver who was having a medical episode, Arlington Heights police said. Sgt. Tom Boggs said the unidentified driver was heading east on Central Road in a sedan. Just past the Arlington Heights Road intersection, the driver veered left and slammed into a sedan heading west. The second car was then rear-ended a pickup truck. Full story.

The ongoing I-90 widening and reconstruction project closes McCornack Road North from Route 72 and Big Timber Road between Elgin and Gilberts until the end of the year. Full story.

Bulls overwhelm Bucks in Game 6

Everyone has been waiting for the Bulls to put together their best effort and Thursday's Game 6 at the Bradley Center might challenge for the most dominating performance in NBA playoff history. The Bulls jumped to an 8-0 lead after three possessions and never let go of the antlers. The final result was a 120-66 victory for the Bulls, easily the most lopsided playoff victory in franchise history. The Bulls clinched the first-round series 4-2. Full story.

Bears choose WR Kevin White from West Virginia at No. 7

The Bears used the seventh overall pick in last night's first round of the NFL draft to select big-play wide receiver Kevin White from West Virginia. White put up spectacular numbers last season, catching 109 passes for 1,447 yards (13.3-yard average) and 10 touchdowns. “I'm ready to turn this city around,” White said at the Auditorium Theatre downtown.
