Chicago man charged with Barrington car burglaries

A Chicago man with convictions for theft and burglary in Lake and DuPage counties was ordered held on $100,000 bail Thursday on charges he took items from cars parked along Palm Street in Barrington last year.

Cook County sheriff's police arrested Darvis Dennis, 27, on a warrant for traffic offenses and connected him to car burglaries that occurred on May 6, 2014, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

According to witnesses, Dennis walked down Palm Street checking for unlocked car doors, Shin said. The witnesses saw Dennis take a GPS device that contained an identifying serial number from an unlocked car, Shin said. Dennis is accused of pawning the GPS device at a Chicago pawnshop, where police identified it from the serial number, Shin said.

Sometime after that, Shin said, the witnesses were detained by Northbrook police. The witnesses, who were subsequently released, told police about the burglaries.

According to Shin, Dennis has 2009 convictions for theft and burglary from Lake County as well as a burglary conviction that same year from DuPage County. He was sentenced to concurrent prison sentences of five years. He received 24 months probation for a 2007 burglary that was terminated unsatisfactorily, Shin said.

He also has a total of six misdemeanor convictions for traffic offenses, marijuana possession and criminal damage to property, for which he received sentences ranging from supervision to jail time, Shin said.

Dennis next appears in court May 21. Because of his background, he faces between six and 30 years in prison if convicted, Shin said.
