This victory means a little more for Naperville Central

Naperville Central's baseball team went 11 long days without a victory.

It made the last two days that much sweeter for the Redhawks.

Coming on the heels of a four-game losing streak, Naperville Central made it two straight wins over Naperville North with Wednesday's 8-3 DuPage Valley Conference road victory.

It wasn't the prettiest of games as the teams combined for 10 errors, including seven by the Huskies. But clutch hitting by the Redhawks made the difference. They scored in six innings and tallied 5 runs with two outs.

"We were all just stroking, so it was a good day today," said Redhawks catcher Justin Wegner. "We knew there was a better team in there and it obviously came out the past two days, so we're looking to carry that forward."

After outscoring the Huskies (6-8, 3-2) 18-3 the last two days, Naperville Central (8-7, 2-3) has a chance at the series sweep on Thursday. While the Redhawks distance themselves from the four-game losing streak, Naperville North will try to get back to the level of play it enjoyed during its four-game winning streak leading up to this week's series.

"Today, very simply, we were terrible defensively," said Huskies coach Carl Hunckler. "We allowed too many extra at-bats, extra swings and we did not compete like North teams have been known to compete. That's a huge concern at any point in the year."

The game's theme appeared in the top of the first inning when Naperville Central scored a run on three errors. Twice the Redhawks scored without managing a hit.

Like Tuesday's win, though, Naperville Central got some big hits from the key bats in the lineup. Wegner went 3-for-5 with 2 doubles while Bobby McMillen also doubled twice and drove in 2 runs.

Naperville North tried keeping pace with lone runs in the second, fourth and fifth inning. Sam Siebers doubled twice and drove in a run for the Huskies.

Glenn Kozlowski pitched 5 solid innings to notch the win for the Redhawks, while Zac Bianucci finished it off with 2 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman Parker Aquino took the loss for the Huskies.

"We talked about competitive at-bats and putting the ball in play, and we had some big hits," said Naperville Central coach Mike Stock. "We put pressure on them and we took advantage of some of the things they gave us."
