    Relatives and friends are exchanging memories of Naperville Park District police founder Bill Young in advance of a memorial toast scheduled for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion. They’re remembering him as a good listener and an understanding leader whose goal was to help teens discover their path. “He really enjoyed his life and his jobs and he didn’t always go by the book so strict with any of them,” his wife, Martha Young, said. “He never stopped caring or wanting to help the children.”

    The Bolingbrook softball team, seeded ninth in the Class 4A Oswego East sectional, shook that sectional up big-time Saturday with an upset of top-seeded and 30-win Benet. So fourth-seeded Naperville Central had another big challenge in front of it when the Redhawks and Raiders met Tuesday in the first sectional semifinal. But there were no surprises for Naperville Central (27-7), and a 3-run fifth inning helped the Redhawks prevail 6-1 and advance to the 11 a.m. Saturday final against the winner of Wednesday’s second semifinal between second-seeded Downers Grove South and third-seeded Downers Grove North.

    For the bulk of the season, Neuqua Valley’s baseball team looked nothing like a perennial power. Well, Neuqua Valley became Neuqua Valley on Saturday. Overcoming a regular season filled with struggles, the Wildcats found a way to win their fourth straight regional title with a stunning 4-2 victory over Naperville Central in the Class 4A Metea Valley regional final in Aurora.

    One streak was broken, one dynasty rekindled. At Saturday’s Boys Track and Field State Finals at Eastern Illinois University, York unseated four-time defending Class 3A champion Lake Park. Retiring coach Stan Reddel won his second title at York, the program’s fifth and first since 2009.

Friday’s Class 3A preliminaries of the boys track and field state finals ended with the Lancers advancing eight entries into Saturday’s finals, matching Neuqua Valley, York and Edwardsville, one more than both Downers Grove North and Thornton.

    If it’s Naperville Central against Naperville North, the one sure thing is it’ll be decided by a single play. On Wednesday, that play was made by Jason Wegner. The Redhawks’ senior second baseman singled home the winning run in the bottom of seventh inning to give Naperville Central’s baseball team a 2-1 victory over Naperville North in the Class 4A Metea Valley regional semifinals in Aurora.

  • Dodson’s turn gives Waubonsie Valley OT win May 23, 2014 10:34 PM
    When Waubonsie Valley needed a goal, it turned to leading scorer Kristen Dodson, and Dodson turned and fired. “I didn’t want this to be our last game, so whatever it took,” the Warriors’ Auburn-bound senior said. “If I had to pass the ball, if someone else had to do something, I just wanted to get the win.” With a defender on her back and the score tied in overtime, Dodson spun and hit a strike from 23 yards that found net, giving the top-seeded Warriors a 2-1 victory against the host Redhawks at the Class 3A Naperville Central regional final. It was Dodson’s 21st goal of the season.
